10-Digit Dialing in 540 Area Code Starting April 24

Edinburg, VA.- April 16, 2021 - Shentel local telephone customers in the 540, 804, or 276 area codes will start to use the area code in addition to the 7-digit telephone number (area code + telephone number) when placing local calls starting April 24. The move to 10-digit dialing is due to a new, national 3 digit suicide prevention hotline number schedule to launch next year.
The change order issued by the Federal Communications Commission and will become mandatory on May 14, 2022. Shentel has elected to allow customers to dial both 10 digit and 7 digit numbers until May of next year.
The telephone numbers of existing customers, including current area code, will not change. The switch to 10-digit dialing will not affect the cost of local phone calls. A call that is local today will be a local call after the dialing change
Some automated dialed calls, such as life-safety systems, alarm and security systems and call forwarding settings, may require reprogramming to include the new dialing procedure. PBX equipment also may need to be reprogramming.
Long-distance calls are unaffected by the new area code. Callers need to dial 1 plus the area code and 7- digit telephone number whenever placing long-distance calls from the 540 area code. Emergency calls to 911 also remain the same and do not require the area code.
