Longwood Lancers on Shentel Cable

Posted 4 January 2017 12:00 AM by julia

Shentel has partnered with Longwood University in Farmville to air all Lancer home basketball games on Shentel Digital Channel 81, extending Longwood's broadcast footprint to the company’s coverage area.

Beginning with the Jan. 4 men’s basketball showdown against Presbyterian at 7 p.m. in Willett Hall, Shentel subscribers can watch the Big South Network broadcasts of men's and women's basketball on Channel 81. The games will be simulcasts of the Big South Network production, which provides live, high-definition coverage of more than 50 Longwood athletics contests each year.

Shentel has a long-standing partnership with Longwood. Most recently, Shentel spent weeks helping the university get prepared to host the only vice presidential debate held during the election last year.

“We are thrilled to partner with Longwood to broadcast Lancer basketball on Shentel Cable,” said Shentel SVP Tom Whitaker. “It’s exciting to expand our relationship with Longwood University, and we hope to include other sports and events in the coming months.”

“I would like to thank Tom Whitaker at Shentel, Darius Thigpen in the Longwood athletics department and our experts in the office of information technology for all the legwork they did to make this happen,” said Trey Eggleston, Longwood assistant athletics director for development and liaison to Longwood’s corporate sponsors. “This is a tremendous opportunity not just for our athletics programs, but for Longwood University as a whole. Coming off hosting the 2016 Vice Presidential Debate, Longwood’s name recognition has never been greater, and we are happy that the athletics department and Shentel can help keep that going.”

Longwood’s Big South Network operation is overseen by Thigpen, also the voice of Longwood athletics heard on WVHL 92.9 Kickin’ Country FM and select Big South Network games, and produced by Seth Wood with assistance from Longwood students and his Richmond, Va.-based video company, Swood Media.

Following tonight’s men’s basketball showdown between the first-place Lancers and Presbyterian, the Longwood women’s basketball team will make its first appearance on Shentel Digital Channel 81 this Saturday, Jan. 7, against UNC Asheville at 2 p.m. For a full schedule of all Longwood athletics contests and Big South Network broadcasts, visit
