Shentel donates to Rural Retreat Depot Foundation

Shenandoah Telecommunications Company (Shentel) (SHEN), local provider of cable, internet and wireless services, in partnership with CoBank, donated $5,000 to the Rural Retreat Depot Foundation on Dec. 3. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity established in 2011 with a mission to acquire, restore and manage the historic Rural Retreat DepotTM in an effort to preserve the culture of the region.

During the donation and recognition ceremony at the Rural Retreat Depot, Shentel executive, Tom Whitaker presented the check to Frank Akers of the Rural Retreat Depot Foundation.  “As a cable and internet provider, we are passionate about connecting the communities we serve.” said Tom Whitaker, Senior Vice President-Cable. “It is our honor to donate to a local foundation like the Rural Retreat Depot, whose mission aligns with our company values.”

Shentel took advantage of a matching fund grant from CoBank’s Sharing Success program which gives $3 million annually to match contributions made to charitable groups throughout rural America. Shentel has partnered with the banking cooperative on at least two other occasions and is grateful for their generosity.

The Rural Retreat Depot as-restored is configured as an 80-seat auditorium, a 20-seat class/lecture/meeting room and a museum. A large SMART Board was purchased using the $5,000 donation and the community will be able to use it at special events, classes, conferences and more. The new SMART Board is installed in the class/meeting room.

“We are very grateful to Shentel for donating this incredible SMART Board to the Depot”, said Frank Akers, Board chair. “We are now equipped to move forward with the establishment of distance learning activities, and streaming of educational and entertainment events into our Town.”
