Bridge Day is a very big deal in the small community of Camden on Gauley, WV.
For one weekend every fall, adventurers, festival-goers and nature lovers descend upon the New River Gorge Bridge to be part of the annual celebration which includes daredevils parachuting from the bridge to the river below.
The 35th annual Bridge Day will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18, and organizers are anticipating about 80,000 people will attend. The bridge is open to pedestrian traffic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you want to watch the jumpers you can stand on the bridge and watch or you can travel to the river below and watch them drift down. Most aim to land on the bull’s eye on the river’s edge, but many end up in the New River.
It is an amazing event. The view of the Gorge from the bridge is stunning, as is the view beneath the bridge staring up as the jumpers leap off with their colorful parachutes opening behind them. There are 875 feet between the bridge and the river. Other amazing statistics are that the bridge is 3030 feet long and 70 feet wide and weighs 88 million pounds.
If you happen to be a Shentel customer, stop by our booth and say hi! We are going to be located closer to the bridge this year and we are going to have some cool prizes and an opportunity to get your picture taken.
