Shentel and HISTORY® bring local veterans to West Virginia high schools

Sixth annual “Take a Veteran to School Day” honors West Virginia vets as they share their experiences with local students

Edinburg, Va. (Nov. 12, 2013) – Shenandoah Telecommunications Company (Shentel) (NASDAQ: SHEN), an established provider of Internet, television and home phone services, is again partnering with the HISTORY® channel to bring West Virginia’s sixth annual Take a Veteran to School Day program to Lewis County High School in Weston, WV, and River View High School in Bradshaw, WV.

Scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Weston and Friday, Nov, 15, in Bradshaw, the West Virginia Take a Veteran to School Day program is part of a national initiative created by HISTORY to teach today’s young adults about the sacrifice and valor of the nation’s veterans. The event, sponsored by the West Virginia Cable Telecommunications Association (WVCTA), honors veterans from all conflicts of war.

Angela Washington, Marketing Manager, Shentel, said, “It is an honor to participate in HISTORY’s Take a Veteran to School program again this year. Shentel values our veterans, and Take a Veteran to School Day is just one way of saying ‘thanks,’ and at the same time allow students to learn more about U.S. history directly from the men and women who have helped keep our country safe.”

Since its inception, the Take a Veteran to School Day program has helped recognize and thank veterans around the Mountain State for their service, bravery and sacrifice to our great nation. In addition, high school and university students have helped to preserve the histories of West Virginia’s veterans by recording their stories for submission to the Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project.

Nationwide, over 10,000 schools have participated in the program with representation in all 50 states and U.S. territories. WVCTA began the program in 2008 and has brought 160 veterans to nearly 20 high schools to honor them in conjunction with Veterans Day or other military observance days. This year, nearly 20 school events are being held around Veterans Day to honor and thank West Virginia veterans.

The Take a Veteran to School Day program is supported by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. In 2009, the West Virginia State House and Senate passed resolutions encouraging West Virginia educators to participate in future Take a Veteran to School Day initiatives. U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller, a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs, is also a supporter of the program.
