Region 2000 Technology Council honors Shentel at annual conference

EDINBURG, VA, May 28, 2013 – Shenandoah Telecommunications Company (Shentel) (NASDAQ: SHEN) was named the 2013 Technology Company of the Year by the Region 2000 Technology Council at its annual conference in Lynchburg, VA.

Shentel is a local provider of phone, TV and high-speed Internet in much of the Region 2000 area which includes the counties of Campbell, Bedford, Appomattox and Amherst.  Since 2010, Shentel spent $200 million in purchasing and upgrading former provider JetBroadband. Those upgrades have resulted in bringing high-speed Internet, digital cable TV and Home phone service to all former JetBroadband markets in Virginia and West Virginia.

It was in recognition of these recent and continuing efforts that Shentel received this award from the Region 2000 Technology Council, said Region 2000 Executive Director Jonathan Whitt.

"Shentel has moved steadily forward, investing the time, energy and resources needed to upgrade local networks, improve customer service and forge strong partnerships with local communities,” said Whitt. “They are most deserving of this year's Technology Company of the Year Award.”

“We certainly appreciate this recognition of our efforts,” said Shentel Vice President of Sales and Marketing Willy Pirtle. “It does not stop here, however. Shentel continues to look for ways to enrich the lives of our residential and business customers through investments in technology, using innovative thinking and delivering high quality local customer service that makes using technology easier.”

Most recently, Shentel added a 50 Mbps high-speed Internet option and has upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0 technology. This after connecting its cable system through a fiber optic backbone to major peering points in Ashburn, VA, and Atlanta, GA.

“Rural residents have the same craving to download high definition movies, stream video content and use multiple Internet-enabled devices at the same time – just like customers in more urban areas,” said Pirtle.

Shenandoah Telecommunications Company is a holding company that provides a broad range of telecommunications services through its operating subsidiaries.  The Company is traded on the NASDAQ Global Select Market under the symbol “SHEN.”  The Company’s operating subsidiaries provide local and long distance telephone, Internet and data services, cable television, wireless voice and data services, alarm monitoring and telecommunications equipment, along with many other associated solutions in the Mid-Atlantic United States.

Region 2000 Technology Council works to foster an environment that stimulates innovation and growth of technology-focused organizations so Region 2000 will be recognized as a place where technology-focused organizations thrive, STEM educational programs flourish and where innovation and technology-based entrepreneurship are championed.
